I admire….. #HAWMC

Free-write about someone you admire?

WOW! This one is giving me trouble. Who do I admire? Why do I admire that person? I went to be thinking about this. As I drifted off to sleep in my warm bed, I was going through everyone I know; family members, friends, old co-workers, actors, business people, and politicians, yet I’m sitting here at my computer wondering who to write about. So, I’m going with someone who did something great this week.

I have a cousin that ran the Boston Marathon this week. Running a marathon is not an easy task. You must be dedicated to your training to complete it and have a fast enough running time to qualify. She has both; in fact she qualified to run it again next year.

I don’t know much about training to run a marathon, but I did train once to walk the Breast Cancer 3-Day. It is hard. I walked every day of the week for a year. I walked in the rain and in the snow and cold. I did it even when exhausted from work and kids.  As it got closer to the days of the walk, I walked all weekend; 15 miles on Saturday, 10 miles on Sunday. It really took up all of my spare time.

I have an appreciation for what she had to do to train. I can’t imagine running as far as I walked. (I know I would have puked) It’s not only the walking or running that goes on either, I had to eat better and different. Oh yea, I also had to eat while walking on weekends. It’s really a challenge to drink the right mixture of Gatorade and water so you don’t get dehydrated.

There are other things about this cousin, Chrissy, that I admire.

She always has it all together. We joke and call her Martha (after Martha Stewart) because she comes to family get together’s not only with good food, but good healthy food. It just seems like her organizational skills are far beyond this virgos. She keeps up with her training even with driving her 2 children to hockey practice and games and does it all with a positive attitude.

She has allergies to some foods and looks at it in a positive way. She cannot have chocolate and I don’t think I could ever give that up. Gluten and dairy bother her as well and at family parties there are plenty of temptations, yet she eats what she can and passes on the cake. At her sisters baby shower Chrissy was cutting all these bars that she couldn’t eat, but she was smiling. She has a strength that I wish I had.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever heard her be negative. She has an air of positivity around her and a strength you see in the way she carries herself. You know the type. If she walked in to a busy restaurant dressed to the 9’s, every one would stop and look at her.

The family jokes, behind their backs, that they wish they were more like the Barry’s. They have the American Dream; good jobs, nice house, and some money to spare. It wasn’t given to them. They had to work hard for it. We’re all just jealous and wish we had it as well.

So, I dedicate this blog to Chrissy and how I wish I could be more like her. I hope that I’ll get strong enough to run again and maybe run a 5k with her. She will have to go slower, I’m sure, but it would be great to share that with her.

  1. Anyone that runs a marathon is an inspiration to me! Here’s to all our smaller scale marathons we run every day. ~ Peter
